Principal’s Report

February was a very busy month with a lot of special and exciting things taking place at Big Valley School.  The month of March is shaping up to be a wonderful month, also.

Parking space is available directly across from the front doors of the school to facilitate parent parking for dropping off and picking up students. The same space will also serve as parking for professionals visiting the school.

Representatives from Smart Photography, and Life Touch attended the February school advisory meeting. They presented on how they approach school pictures, and the services and options that are offered. They also identified the costs associated with their services. If you have strong views on one company over the other, please make your views known to the School Advisory Council, or to myself at the school. A decision has to be made as to what company will be taking the school pictures.

Report cards will be going home on March 19th. Parent and teacher interviews will be held on the evenings of March 30, 31st, and April 1st.

I received fifteen responses from parents in regards to the progress reports survey. The survey asked parents to respond to the question, “Do progress reports effectively communicate your child’s learning progress?” Of the fifteen responses, twelve indicated that parents agreed with the question. For grades 5 to 9, progress reporting will remain the same. I will continue to look into the process that is used for Kindergarten through Grade 4.

Students from Grades 4 to 9, and teachers completed the Alberta Education surveys. These surveys were completed on line, and are used to develop the school’s accountability pillars results.

Our basketball teams are doing well. After a slow start to the year, the girls’ team is gaining momentum and improving well. The boys’ team is undefeated having stunned a WEH Grade 9 team by 6 points. An excellent effort by the six players involved. We continue to practice and prepare for February’s basketball games. Thank you to Mrs. Switzer and Mr. Berri Shirley for taking the time to work with and support our players.

The second of our two ski days at Canyon was once again supported by the weather. The weather was great, the snow excellent, and students and parents enjoyed a wonderful day.

The Big Valley School presentation at the AISI (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) Convention was a great success. Our students and teachers along with Mrs. Bauman made a well received presentation. We received congratulations from the Alberta Education School Technology Branch, the School Improvement Manager, Alberta Education, and were mentioned in the closing remarks of the convention. Well done all!

We are currently building our school website, and it is really starting to take shape. You will be able to access many of the documents that we send home including newsletters, minutes from the SAC, updates, etc. Check it out! You can reach our website at http://bigvalley.clearview.ab.ca/

Teachers’ Convention is on March 4 and 5, 2010 – so no classes for students on those days.

Spring Break is from March 22 to 26 (inclusive) so no classes on those days.

Mr. Kim and the Frontier General Store are sponsoring another “Whole Pizza Day” on March 31, 2010. Thank you so much.

Wishing everyone a wonderful month!!

Yours truly,
Dave McCann,
Prinicipal
